Yeshiva Ohr Yisrael is named in honor of the landmark sefer written by Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. Rabbi Salanter was the founder of the Musar movement. The Musar movement exhorts all Jews to improve themselves continually. Ohr Yisrael lays out a road map to help readers understand themselves more clearly, to work on refining their characters, and to continually enhance the purity and integrity of their interpersonal relationships using Torah as their guide.
Yeshiva Ohr Yisrael is dedicated to the premise that all who enter our halls will continually strive to better themselves. We aim to create a community of life-long learners firmly rooted in Torah but knowledgeable and proficient in general studies as well. We strongly believe that Torah, mitzvoth, and personal integrity always come first. We also believe that there is wisdom, beauty, and practical value to a strong secular education. We strive to nurture true B’nei Torah dedicated to continual study, personal development, and personal integrity.
Yeshiva Ohr Yisrael was founded by Rabbi Uri Feldman. Rabbi Feldman offered a vision to the greater Boston community: our young people can and must be great in all 3 of the pillars upon which the world stands: Torah, Divine Service, and Acts of Human Kindness. Rabbi Feldman’s vision is to create young men of learning who will truly appreciate the breadth of Hashem’s beautiful world through the study of gemara, Tanach, science, math, language arts, and other matters. We expect our students to be well-versed in both Torah and secular studies with the understanding that their thoughts and actions will always be based on Torah and halachah.
Ohr Yisrael, the Light of Israel, calls upon our young men to be a light to all nations, including our own. Yeshiva Ohr Yisrael educates the leaders of the future to fully understand and appreciate the beauty of Torah and to serve as models of true Torah values for the world around us.
